How our fire ant bait treatments work
Bait treatments for fire ants are the best most cost-effective way to control fire ants on larger properties. Because the product we use is a bait, the fire ants must forage for it and ultimately take it back to the colony and most importantly the queen. The amount of product used is only 1 to 1.5 pounds per acre which is such a small amount you may not even notice it, also the fire ants will generally take most of it under ground. It is safe enough that we can use it on playgrounds!
Spring and late Summer treatments
Spring fire ant treatments start in mid April to May and are great to clean up your property of these annoying and destructive pests. The fire ant baits have only a short residual but we stand by a no re infestation guarantee with our treatments for a four month period. Generally there will be a few new colonies by the end of the period and most of our customers will do second treatment.
The late summer treatment from mid July thru September will help kill new colonies including those that you can't see which show face around the holidays. We cease treatments after September because generally fire ants do not predictably forage after then in upstate South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia.
The two treatments very much work together and compliment one another in this fashion but one time per season treatments are very effective as well. It just depends on the area and the situation.
For properties or certain areas of your property where the fire ant tolerance is absolutely zero all of the time we also offer year round guaranteed programs. Contact us for more information.
Scheduling
The only drawback of baiting is that fire ants are picky about when and what they eat. That means that there are a limited number of days per year which we can effectively treat fire ants with baits.
In order to bait treat we need a 10 percent or less chance of rain, no dew, and a low temperature of 60 degrees or above. This may be a (morning of) decision for us to do bait treatments considering the unpredictability of the weather.
These limitations make it hard for us to pinpoint a specific treatment date. In order to service all of our customers we put them on a go list and group everyone by regions to maximize the number we can service in an afternoon. We however can generally get all of our spring treatments done by the end of May and we make it a priority to get new customers at the top of the list! If you have a scheduled outdoor event, let us know as well.
In short, when you sign on with us there will generally be no more notifications except for a text when we are on the way. You do not need to be home for us to apply the treatment, and your invoice will be emailed unless instructed otherwise. Always feel free to call us with any questions. If there are any special considerations or concerns that you may have such as outdoor animals or days or time of day you do not want a treatment please go ahead and contact us so we can make arrangements or answer questions.
Keep us posted
It is rare but there are circumstances that cause the treatment not to work as good as it should or at all. We encourage our customers to keep us posted and let us know because we won't stop until our customers are satisfied and the treatment works as it should.
